We write to you on erev Shabbat to encourage everyone to take seriously the government’s guidelines with respect to the corona virus, which can be found at https://coronavirus.dc.gov/node .
From the perspective of Halacha, the issue is clear: your safety, the safety of your neighbors, and the safety of the larger community must be the priority. Therefore if someone feels sick or is concerned about their own increased risk because of their preexisting health status we urge you not to come to shul. This is a fluid situation which can quickly change. We are following the guidelines of DC Government and for now all services are continuing as scheduled.
However, out of precautionary measures we are refraining from any physical contact — no handshakes, hugs, or any such greetings. We are also going to broadcast our Megillah reading on Facebook Live for those who are unable to attend on account of the situation.
We urge everyone to turn to Hashem in these difficult days and increase our intentionality in our prayers and performance of mitzvot. It is ironic that in this moment of communal anxiety when we traditionally lean heavily on each other we are now being urged for medical reasons to increase our physical isolation. However, physical isolation does not mean isolation. We can and should look for ways to support each other using technology.
With prayers for health and a Shabbat Shalom, Maharat Ruth Friedman Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld
